The Long Story
Hey, I’m Sandy,
Thanks For Being Here…
I am a Mum of teenagers, partner and entrepreneur, whose been busy running a business in the health and wellness industry for the past 18 years. I’ve been lucky to be blessed with great health but every now and then, something has come along to challenge me. And whilst many would resort to seeking the standard treatment and answers, these times have pushed me out of my comfort zone and given me (thankfully) the opportunity to learn more about myself and the things I can, and need to change in my life, in order to heal and become my healthiest, happiest and best self.
Unstoppables is a culmination of what I’ve learnt (and am still learning) over the past 30 years. From my days as a Nurse in the 1990’s, to my time in the corporate world as an Asia Pacific Marketing Manager for a global software company, to my time starting and running my own organic business for almost two decades. You can say that I’ve learnt a thing or 5,893 about health, wellness and what we can do to give our mind, body and soul the love and care they need so that we can thrive and live our best life.
At Unstoppables, I want to share the things that I’ve learnt and do with you, so that you can life a healthier, happier and unstoppable life. I want to put the power back into your hands, to help you become the CEO of your own health and to give you the actionable tips, tricks, guides, checklists from me and the brightest minds in the world. Along the way, you can expect my honesty, some humour, to feel better, look better and to grow – and who knows, you may even inspire some people and others around you.
I’m so thrilled that you’re here! I can’t wait for you to join me as we truly are better together!
Much love, Sandy xx
PS – And for those of you that like all the juicy details, keep reading to learn how diverse career changes, a health challenge in my 20’s changed the trajectory of my life forever, and how the mantra “no fear, no doubt” got me here.
Sandy Abram – The Long Story
Being a Nurse in the 1990’s was one of the best things I did. Living in the Nurses’ residence, learning about life (and death) as a young woman and being there for people and families at their greatest time of need, was an honour. Unfortunately, and after a few years, Nursing became disheartening. Resources were lacking, the workload was unmanageable, being unable to even sit and chat with a patient for a few minutes to see how they were feeling, was soul destroying, and seeing the power of the pharmaceutical companies, even back then, was an eye opener. Doctors, surgeons and consultants were whisked away on fancy island holidays, the lectures to medical students were sponsored by drug companies and patients with no past medications or medical history, were suddenly given a chart full of drugs. In hospital, the food was poor, the environment was drab, there was no chance of giving any patient some fresh air or sunshine, and getting a good nights sleep was pretty much impossible. Sadly, not much has changed since then.
It was time to embark on a new adventure and seeing the IT industry was “going to be big”, off I went to explore new pastures. I started working for Macromedia (now Adobe) at the birth of multimedia and website development. The company was considered uber cool at the time and the technology was changing fast. Being the person that I am, I worked hard and gave a lot. In a few years, I became the Asia Pacific Marketing Manager, travelling around Asia and amongst a bucket full of responsibilities, I was organising flagship product launch events that would easily have 2,000+ people, excuse me, fans, attending. At one point, I had a Macromedia event happening somewhere in APAC every 2.5 days! If that wasn’t enough, I also embarked on completing my MBA at Swinburne University, which I’m always glad I did – even though I despised the group work and still have nightmares about taking on other people’s workload! At this rate, something had to give – and so it did – my health.
I was around 28 years of age when I was diagnosed with severe endometriosis. The fact that I had endured excruciating pain over the years, whilst holding down an intense role in the corporate world and studying part time, just shows how strong we women are. Being a Nurse, I knew what the treatment, and worse, what the side effects would be, and when asking my well-respected Melbourne Gynae if there were any natural treatments available, he shooshied me out the door, with script in hand, saying, I’ll see you back here for more surgery, likely…actually strike that, definitely.
It took me about a week to fill the script, but once I did and once I read the side effects in black and white, I knew I couldn’t and didn’t want to do this to my body. There had to be another way. There was, and who knew that my decision here, would change the trajectory of my life forever?
I decided to see a Naturopath – in fact I made an appointment with three! I decided that this was going to be a very important person in my life so I had to make sure it was the right one for me. The first one was OK. She was very nice and caring and she kindly gave me a book on Endometriosis to read, which I still have today – sorry Naturopath # 1.
Naturopath # 2 was amazing. She asked about my life, my diet, what I do, my relationships, my whole world. She took the time to not just look at me as a female reproductive system that was in trouble, but as a whole person. This special healer and Naturopath is still in my life today. She has been someone I have trusted for the past 25 years and who I now trust with my children as she continues to care for me and the next generation. Needless to say, the story is a happy one. Within one year I was completely cured of endometriosis. I changed my diet (I went completely organic), I changed my lifestyle (I started doing Yoga, meditating, positive visualisations), I took the preparations and supplements I was offered, and I was shown first hand, the miraculous way our body can heal itself if we give it the right conditions and environment. Oh, and as for that high stress, soul destroying job, that was gone too. The universe and fate kindly gave me exactly what I needed – I was made redundant by a VP that never really liked me or appreciated me.
So, with a new lease of life and a passion for the power of organic food and natural healing, what else was there to do now, but start an organic import and distribution business right? After reading about a beautiful tea brand from the UK, one sunny Sunday afternoon in my courtyard, called Hampstead Tea, and after a few email exchanges with the owner, our business dream had started and our first brand was confirmed.
With no knowledge of running a business, let alone importing and wholesaling food, and with no fear and no doubt (a mantra I had learnt in Yoga and repeated in my head a gazillion times until I believed it), my amazing partner and I embarked on an adventure that would see a few pallets of tea land in our garage a few months later, and a business journey and partnership that would span almost two decades. The business was First Ray, the online store was called Wholesome Hub and the change we made to the industry was monumental.
Apart from many great achievements, First Ray was the first company in Australia to introduce sustainably caught tinned fish to the market. We worked with Greenpeace for 7 years, finally getting the major brands like Safcol and retailers like Woolies to change their practices – after all, if a small company and brand could offer sustainably caught tuna and canned fish, then they could no longer use the excuse that it “couldn’t be done”. First Ray ended up selling millions of units of products that were better for people and better for the planet. We worked with the best retailers in Australia, both online and bricks and mortar, and created change every time a box went out the door.
As for me personally, I was honoured to be voted AusMumpreneur of the Year for Sustainability, to have been voted Top 50 People in Ecommerce (twice), to be voted a Top 50 Small Business Leader and to be voted a Remodista Top 50 Women2Watch (twice), amongst other awards and achievements. It was a great time and honour, but after 18 years and in 2023, it was time for a change, as my partner and I handed First Ray and Wholesome Hub over to new owners and hands.
And so now the journey and new adventure begins.
Over the past few years I have become extremely passionate about how we can optimise our health by living our life more aligned to the way nature intended. I’ve been immersed in the benefits of cold therapy, the need for sunlight therapy, how we can strengthen our mitochondria and improve our circadian health and rhythms.
Sadly, our modern world is hectic and demanding. Despite all our advances, chronic diseases, illnesses, and physical, mental, and emotional stress all continue to skyrocket. Our bodies are bombarded with pollution daily. From our food and water, to the air we breathe, to the products we use and even the harmful EMF emissions we can’t even see.
We need to prioritise and optimise our health so I’m hoping I can inspire and help you and others to do this.
I am incredibly excited about helping people put the power of health back into their hands, helping people reconnect with nature and her rhythms, and helping others thrive and become unstoppable. After all, if we’re healthy and happy, there is a joy and freedom that exists, in that we are able to create a life we love, we’re able to look after our family and those we love the most and to make our dreams come true.
Ready to get started? I’m so thrilled that you’re here and I can’t wait for us to embark on this journey together! And if you’ve gotten this far, thank you for taking the time to read my story. I hope it’s inspired you in some way to look after yourself, to find your truth and to seek out those natural healing paths.
Please reach out at any time and I look forward to embarking on this journey together.
With much love,
Sandy xx
PS – And as for Naturopath # 3 – I never actually made it to that appointment. I had found the right natural health practitioner and dear friend for me! Thanks Karen.
