What is Blue Light?

Our sun emits all colors of light. From red, orange, yellow, green, blue, indigo and violet, exposure to this full color spectrum of light is essential for our health and wellbeing. In terms of blue light and red light, blue light is high energy with short wavelengths whilst red andorange light is lower energy with long wavelength light.

Everyday, we are exposed to a plethora of artificial light. The digital devices which we all rely on to some degree, including our TVs, phones, computers and tablets emit a blue light – in that, the light they emit lacks the balance of reds and orange lights and therefore poses a health risk. Blue light is also emitted by the lights and LED lights we generally use today. These lights are everywhere and within our homes, on the streets, within offices and all buildings.

So in summary, blue light isn’t necessarily a bad thing per se, after all, it’s found in our sun and nature. The issue with artificial blue light is that it lacks the balancing reds and oranges that would normally be present and which forms part of the full spectrum of light.

How Does Nature’s Blue Light Effect our Circadian Rhythm and Health?

As part of the full spectrum of sunlight, the blue light helps to regulate our natural sleep and wake cycles known as our circadian rhythm. When exposed to direct sunlight and nature’s blue light in the morning, it suppresses the production of melatonin, our sleep hormone, and stimulates the release of cortisol, boosting our energy and alertness, and keeping us awake. These are all good things.

Exposing ourselves to direct sunlight in the morning also starts a full cascade of other internal processes and systems as nature tells our 30 trillion clocks inside us, what time it is and what it needs to do.

What Does Artificial Blue Light Do At Night?

In the evening and after sunset however, exposure to artificial blue light sends our body the wrong messages and inhibits the release of melatonin. Melatonin affects our ability to fall asleep and get the good quality sleep our body needs amongst other things. For example, melatonin also has anti-tumoral properties with many studies showing a connection to artificial blue light at night and breast cancer in women.

In regards to sleep, sleep is after all, one of the top pillars to good health. It helps to recharge and repair our mitochondria, the powerhouse in each of our cells and is our time to rest, renew, repair, rejuvenate and all those other re good things. Sleep has also been linked to making us smarter, happier, healthier, more attractive, slimmer and warding off a host of diseases including cancer and neurological disorders, which if you could put in a pill, people would be lining up for.
