🌅 Rise Report

Bounce Back Quicker

Feeling under the weather? Here’s a ridiculously simple recovery hack your doctor probably won’t mention: get yourself near a window. Better yet? Crack it open for some fresh air.

Researchers tracked 281 intensive care patients and found something fascinating. Those lucky enough to score rooms with windows were discharged a full day earlier than patients stuck in windowless boxes (4.8 vs 5.8 days). Same illnesses, same treatments, same everything—except for that rectangle of natural light.

Here’s what’s happening: Hospitals are notorious circadian rhythm wreckers with blue light LEDs blazing 24/7, beeping machines, and constant chatter. Your body has no clue if it’s Tuesday morning or Friday night.

Natural light acts like a biological reset button, reminding your body when to sleep and when to heal. Even critically ill ICU patients bounced back faster with just a view of daylight.

The takeaway? Natural light isn’t just nice to have—it’s medicine your body is craving. Park yourself by that window and let nature do what it does best: help you heal.

Your Smartwatch Is Sleeping on the Job

Think your smartwatch knows when you’re stressed? Think again.

Researchers tested 800 students’ Garmin watches against what people actually felt four times daily for three months. When it came to stress levels, the correlation was “basically zero.”

The problem? Your watch makes wild guesses based on heart rate and movement. Elevated pulse? Must be stress! Except it could just as easily be excitement, exercise, or romance. Your watch can’t tell the difference between panic and passion.

Millions of people are making health decisions based on what their wrist is telling them. And if they’re getting this wrong – what else are they messing up? We need to get better at tuning into ourselves and listening to what our body is trying to tell us. After all, your internal wisdom has been alive and well since our ancestors’ time and creation – that’s some pretty solid user data.

The Only Kind of Brainwashing You Want

Picture this: whilst you’re sleeping peacefully, your brain brings in its own cleaning crew – just like those office cleaners who work after hours when everyone’s gone home.

During the day, your brain generates toxic waste proteins from all its hard work – including amyloid beta and tau proteins linked to Alzheimer’s disease. During sleep, cerebrospinal fluid floods through your brain in waves every 20-30 seconds, washing away the day’s cellular waste.

Norwegian researchers discovered that even one night of poor sleep dramatically slows this waste removal process. The concerning part? Unlike catching up on missed work emails, you can’t simply recover this brain cleaning with one good night’s rest.

So when you’re tempted by that late-night scroll session, remember – you’re not just losing sleep, you’re calling off your brain’s essential maintenance crew.

Cerebral Spinal Fluid – Liquid Gold

Flowing through your brain and spinal cord right now is cerebrospinal fluid – one of your body’s most sophisticated biological systems. This isn’t just water with a fancy name. CSF is 99% water and 1% of over 3,000 different proteins – a precisely engineered solution that maintains your brain’s chemical environment, removes toxic waste (as we’ve just learnt), and provides critical protection.

Your body produces about 500ml of CSF daily while maintaining only 150ml in circulation at any time. This means your entire CSF supply replaces itself 3-4 times every 24 hours. During sleep, this system becomes even more efficient, increasing CSF flow by 60% as brain cells shrink to create optimal pathways for waste removal. How clever is that?!

🔥 Deep Dive: TL;DL

Are you truly Vitamin D deficient?

I have a confession to make. I was a vitamin D supplementor – someone who quietly obsessed over my Vitamin D numbers, scrutinising blood tests and popping vitamin D daily. I believed that getting my vitamin D levels to a certain number would grant me a free pass to good health. Well, my health rebels, it’s time for a little rethink.

To start with, here are a few things you may not know…

Vitamin D supplementation is a multi-billion dollar industry. With a robust CAGR (compound annual growth rate) of 8.79% between now and 2030 – sales are estimated to reach USD 7.96 billion in just four years. From tablets to gummies to plant-based alternatives, it’s no wonder this market keeps expanding as we’re all warned to stay out of the sun.

So is this explosive growth based on scientific evidence that supports vitamin D’s role in health? Or is there a fundamental misunderstanding of how vitamin D actually works in our bodies?

Today’s TL;DL (too long, didn’t listen) takes us on a vitamin D journey with Carrie Bennett, starting with the very first question: what exactly are you taking and testing for?

The Real Story Behind Vitamin D and what you’re Taking

Here’s the reality check: that vitamin D blood test you’re getting only measures ONE form of vitamin D – what they call the “storage form” or 25(OH)D. But your body actually makes DOZENS of different vitamin D metabolites when sunlight hits your skin.

Testing just one is like judging an entire orchestra by hearing only the triangle.

When you pop that D3 supplement, it can become a couple of these metabolites, but it cannot become the dozens of vitamin D compounds that natural sun exposure creates – including powerful anti-cancer metabolites that you literally cannot get from a bottle.

So what are you actually taking? A synthetic version that hits maybe 10% of what your body can naturally produce. And what are you testing for? One isolated marker that doesn’t tell you anything about the other 90% of vitamin D activity happening in your cells.

It’s like trying to understand your entire financial health by only looking at your checking account balance while ignoring your savings, investments, and assets. You’re getting a fraction of the story, but making decisions based on that incomplete picture.

Why Supplements Keep Failing Us

Here’s where it gets really interesting. When UVB light hits the cholesterol in your skin, it creates previtamin D3, which then becomes dozens of different metabolites – including powerful anti-cancer compounds that you literally CANNOT get from a bottle.

This is why all those high-dose vitamin D studies keep disappointing researchers. A three-year study in JAMA found that people taking the HIGHEST doses of vitamin D actually had MORE bone loss than those taking smaller amounts. The opposite of what they expected!

Cancer prevention studies? “Not clear” if supplementation helps. Multiple sclerosis research? No evidence that supplements reduce severity. Dementia studies? “Unclear whether vitamin D supplementation could reduce risk.”

But here’s what DOES work: people with higher sun exposure consistently show reduced rates of cancer, autoimmune diseases, and all-cause mortality.

If Not Supplements, Then What?

We don’t have to throw the vitamin D baby out with the bath water – it’s not as if we can’t get vitamin D from other sources.

Our first source of vitamin D should always be healthy sun exposure. Then food sources.

When you get vitamin D from whole food sources, you’re not getting an isolated compound – you’re getting it packaged exactly as nature intended, with all the co-factors your body needs to use it properly.

Take cod liver oil, for example. When you take cod liver oil, you get both vitamin D and vitamin A together – the way they’ve existed in nature for millions of years. Your body recognises this combination and knows exactly what to do with it.

The Exception to the Rule

Carrie mentions one scenario where short-term supplementation might help (and I would definitely agree) – acute respiratory infections or perhaps time of acute illness. There are times where vitamin D supplementation may have a place, however, I would recommend doing this under the guidance of a trusted health professional. And you could always go for the cod liver oil instead at that time too.

The Bottom Line

Your body houses vitamin D metabolites in every single cell – including water-soluble forms that never get tested. Winter “deficiency” might actually be a natural metabolic switch, working alongside increased melatonin production.

Those concerning symptoms people get from long-term high-dose supplementation – hair loss, hypothyroid-like effects, feeling worse over time? They often resolve when people stop the supplements.

In the end you need to do what’s best for you – this isn’t medical advice. But here’s what I hope you’ll consider: maybe the health benefits you’re seeking can’t be found in a pill after all. You can’t supplement the sun.

Your Brain’s Overnight Magic

We’ve all heard how important sleep is, and yet we still find ourselves scrolling our phones way longer than we should, getting caught up in just one more episode, telling ourselves “five more minutes” as we sabotage our own rest.

But here’s what we need to think about: sleep isn’t just self-care for tomorrow morning, in the hope we wake up bright eyed and bushy tailed, it’s about your future self and those dreams you hold onto.

Every night you prioritise sleep, you’re literally investing in the brain that will chase your biggest dreams. That cerebrospinal fluid (CSF) – which is 99% water – flowing through your mind? It’s washing away today’s limitations and making space for tomorrow’s possibilities.

And here’s the beautiful part – if water truly holds memory and intention, imagine infusing your CSF with positive vibes before bed. Imagine sending loving thoughts of positivity to the water that runs through and around every cell. Your brain’s cleaning crew doesn’t just remove toxic proteins during sleep, they’re essentially programming your future.

So what if we flipped the script? What if instead of scrolling mindlessly, we created a sanctuary – a cool, dark, tech-free bubble where your magical cerebrospinal fluid can work its overnight magic? The health revolution starts when you choose your sleep and your dreams over your screen.

Your brain undergoes cleaning every night you sleep

🔢 Number Crunch

1,400 grams  – How much your brain weighs. But thanks to cerebrospinal fluid, it reduces your brain’s effective weight to just 25-50 grams through buoyancy – meaning CSF makes your brain feel 96% lighter than it actually is. Without this buoyancy effect, your brain would literally collapse under its own weight.
