1 THING I’M DOING

VITAMIN D
Vitamin D is more than a Vitamin. It’s a superhero, capable of fighting multiple villains single-handedly. A substance so powerful, expert William Grant, who just happens to have published more than 300 papers on Vitamin D, says it should be viewed as a hormone, based on the way it acts across multiple processes and organs. There is so much upside to this “vitamone” (see what I did there?) that it also happens to be one of my daily non-negotiable supplements and something I give to my children, partner and encourage my parents, and sister to have too. Here’s why.

What if I said, you could take a supplement that is very low risk, very low cost and widely available and it could reduce the incidence of poor cardiovascular health, diabetes, hypertension, cancer, cognitive decline, infections, autoimmune disease, allergies and obesity? What if this same very well tolerated gem could also reduce the risk of Influenza and COVID-19 Infections and deaths? What would you have to lose? What could you gain? Answer. Little and lots.

Vitamin D Checking Strategy

Every 6 months I get my Vitamin D levels checked. The funny thing is, the level the GP thinks is “normal”, my Naturopath thinks is “low”. I’m no doctor and this is not medical advice, but rather, my personal experiences, so please seek your own information from your trusted healthcare professional.

My most recent Vitamin D blood result was 114 nmol/L. Well within the “normal range”. I stopped taking Vitamin D daily over the Summer months to test how my body went creating Vitamin D from my sun exposure and diet. Whilst my levels were good, (normal range is considered 50-200 nmol/L – a rather broad range I must say), my Naturopath considered my levels to be low saying  “optimal levels are between 120-150.”

I know many people don’t see the benefit of taking supplements. Even our own very uninspiring AMA President called them “very expensive urine” just a few years ago. Remember, preventative medicine doesn’t make Big Pharma trillions of dollars. Personally, due to the degradation of our soil and food quality and the increased amount of toxins we’re exposed to, even though I eat organic food and grow what I can, taking good quality supplements and cycling different ones based on my health and how I’m feeling, is definitely a part of my wellness routine. The benefits seem to be just too good to refuse – especially when it comes to Vitamin D / Hormone D.

2 THINGS I’VE LEARNT

WHAT KIND OF TIRED ARE YOU?

“I’m soooo tired and just need a rest” are words we can all relate to. But what if I asked you “what kind of tired are you”? Huh? Yes, there are different tireds and therefore different rests that suit each one. Read on to find out what may help you recover quicker…

  • Mental Rest – this rest is said to be one of the most important. Try switching off the news, social media and avoid working on the weekend or doing late nights. Take a little holiday, meditate and just allow yourself to sit outside and stare at nothing, apart from the beauty around you and that cute little bird over there, that seems to be chirping something sweet to me.
  • Emotional Rest – stress is a real killer these days – like literally! To get emotional rest, spend some time alone, so you can disconnect from the expectations of others and just be you. Or spend time with close friends where you can be yourself, have honest, non judgemental conversations and sort through life that way. Also, therapy with a trained counsellor, therapist or coach may be what you need.
  • Physical Rest – probably the most common, you can get more physical rest by prioritising sleep, eating well, drinking plenty of water and enjoying relaxing activities like a nice long bath. It may sound counterintuitive but gentle exercise and stretching is actually a way to help your body recover. And here’s an idea. Just say “no”. Stop over committing yourself and thinking you have to say yes to everything.
  • Sensory Rest – we are constantly under bright LED lights, on our phones and exposed to noise and stimulation. From billboards selling us something at traffic lights to notifications pinging at all hours, our nervous system is taxed! Get some sensory rest by lying in a dark room with no sound or light. Meditation is great for this one too or perhaps just turn things off and learn to enjoy some peace and quiet.
  • Spiritual Rest – the world is overwhelming at times. Spiritual rest brings a sense of belonging to our lives. It makes us feel like we are part of something bigger and can bring us a sense of calm, and peace when the world is chaotic around us. Engaging in prayer can bring spiritual rest as does meditating or having a faith in something that is greater than us.

DISCIPLINE EQUALS FREEDOM
If you seek freedom in life – be it financial freedom, freedom from sickness or more free time, it is discipline that will help you get there. Without discipline, there will be no real progress as it is easy for fear, doubt, procrastination, laziness and all their evil friends to paralyse us and keep us back in our box. 3 THINGS TO EXPLORE

CONSENSUS
There is a saying, “all scientists and doctors agree, when you silence the ones that don’t”. It’s sad, but true, and more so than ever.

The role of debate is to vigorously present and argue differing points of view, and it is only through this pulling apart of every angle, possibility and thought bubble, that we can come to healthier conclusions.

People don’t naturally come to a high level of agreement so consensus is a huge problem. We’re not seeing vigorous debate in the media anymore. Anyone that disagrees, is shut down, their socials account deleted, alogirithms sorted so you don’t see their content. We need to be like lions and hunt for the truth.

THREE QUESTIONS
Three good questions to ask yourself when considering a product, company or politician…

1. Where did they /  how do they make their money?
2. How is their bread buttered? Who are they indebted to?
3. What can’t they afford to say or think?

THE MAJORITY
“Whenever you find yourself on the side of the majority, it’s time to pause and reflect.” – Mark Twain
