1 THING I’M DOING

A DOSE OF SUNLIGHT DAILY – ONE OF THE 5 PILLARS OF HEALTH
Over the past few decades, many people (or is that most people) have become almost fearful of the sun. Not daring to leave the house “unprotected”, the sunscreen slathering process and cover up all bare skin, seems to start at the first sign of our sun peaking through the clouds, even when temperatures are barely in the high teens.

Now, I’m not suggesting we all go outside and bake our bodies for hours on end. The sun at high temperatures and over long durations of course can be harmful and some people have health conditions. But what I am saying is that all living creatures in life need sunlight to live; plants, bugs, animals, and as we are living creatures, that means us, too.

Our skin is a pivotal organ in the production of Vitamin D and melatonin. Vitamin D is key in promoting a strong and healthy immune system whilst melatonin, in addition to playing a huge role in managing our sleep-wake cycle and circadian rhythms, also stimulates our immune system. Both hormones have a long list of other benefits so let’s just say, these are both extremely helpful in promoting overall good health.

So, here’s the deal. Every day, as one of the 5 pillars of health (the others being sleep, movement, nutrition / hydration and relationships), we need exposure to sunlight. Ideally, first thing in the morning and for 15 – 20 minutes per day. Even if it is overcast, we will still get the benefits and if we can expose some skin, like our arms, that’s great. The sun and its energies are life giving. We need to harness its power, whilst being sensible of course, but like all things these days, let’s critically thnk about the information we’ve been fed by mainstream media and do our own research. If you’d like to learn more, here is someone I’ve been really enjoying on this topic, Dr Andrew Huberman.

2 THINGS I’VE LEARNT

GUZZLING WATER
It seems, our bodies and certain organs in the morning, are different to our bodies and organs at night. When it comes to our kidneys we should be guzzling water first thing in the morning and drinking up big, as our bodies and brain are quite dehydrated after our long rest and sleep.

On the contrary at night, and especially if you have a tendency to wake up in the middle of the night for inconvenient wee stops, we should sip our last beverage of the day. The speed at which we drink has an impact on the urgency we need to go to the toilet so sipping at night, may just save you from that 2am trip to the bathroom.

HOW TO SAVE SEEDS
Remember, my awesome wild cherry tomato bush I spoke about last time? The one producing cherry tomatoes in abundance, the size of little golf balls? The thought of having that same tomato plant next year, just fills me with excitement so this week I’ve been learning how to save tomato seeds. Here’s a great little video that I’ve been following. I’ll let you know next year how I went.

3 THINGS TO EXPLORE

OUR STATES
How we feel on Monday morning, is directly related to what we did on Sunday. And how we feel on Tuesday, is based on what we did on Monday. And so it goes. Our state each day, is a reflection of our actions and choices, the 24 hours prior.

We can make a difference to how to feel tomorrow based on what we do today. So what are you doing today, to set yourself up for a great Monday tomorrow?

WHO AM I BECOMING?
Setting goals is something we’re all encouraged to do in order to live our best life. One of mine is spending more time creating these types of newsletters :-) ha ha…

But a great question to ask ourselves is not only what are my goals, but who am I becoming, and who will I be, if I achieve that goal?

DESIDERATA
Excerpt from Desiderata….

“You are a child of the universe,
no less than the trees and the stars;
you have a right to be here.
And whether or not it is clear to you,
no doubt the universe is unfolding as it should.

Therefore be at peace with God,
whatever you conceive Him to be,
and whatever your labors and aspirations,
in the noisy confusion of life keep peace with your soul.

With all its sham, drudgery, and broken dreams,
it is still a beautiful world.
Be cheerful.
Strive to be happy”

— Max Ehrmann, 1927
